ST. AUBIN NURSERY
2011 CATALOG
A large shrub or small tree that impresses over and over Very hardy. Peeling paper bark. Salt tolerant. Fast growing. No maintenance. This is as close to the
perfect ornamental I've seen. The name comes from the
fact that many of the flower heads are comprised of seven flowers. In September, the real show begins. Tons of fragrant white
flowers appear, attracting butterflies. After a month or longer, the flowers fall off, the calyces develop into deep red lobes that are more stunning (in my opinion) than the original flowers. Aaron Bradley of Moore Landscape convinced me to plant 4 of these unbeliev- able plants in my yard years ago and I will be eternally Grateful. 20' x 18'

Shingle Oak
A large midwestern Oak that early pioneers used its narrowly split wood to make shingles for their roofs. This may be the most difficult oak to grow in the field as every tree is divergent and it seems to be stubborn. Taping, staking, pruning doesn't make every Shingle
Oak straight, I had to learn they, like us, have individual personalities. The leaves are elliptical to oblong with smooth, unlobed margins. Native in most of Illinois.

Bur Oak
Massive, majestic member of the White Oak group
Mature Oaks can have trunks up to 10' in diameter.
The long taproot makes this tree very drought resistant. Young stems have corky ridges. Sometimes. There are many strains of Bur Oak with different attributes. I have noticed the very corky and fissured plants are often shorter, stouter and less symmetrical. The smoother barked Burs have more uniform shape, are taller and develop a more central leader. I always like trees with attitude, so I try to select acorns from trees that will produce the more corky (quirky?) ones.

Cross between Columnar English Oak and Swamp White Oak. The branch structure is much stronger and consistently
fuller than other cultivars of columnar oaks. The mildew

A very large forest tree that belongs to the white oak group. Rather than forming pure stands, Swamp Chestnut coexist with other hardwoods, waiting until the larger trees die in order to take their place in the canopy. Patience pays off for this tree! The National Champion
is over 200 ft. tall. Position small trees in sun for the fastest growth. Some great pictures here, (www.cas.vanderbilt.edu./bioimages/species/gumi.htm) Native to southern Illinois.

Chestnut Oak

English Oak
I am quite sure this member of the white oak group is the fastest growing of all oaks. Although not originally native to the U.S., it was brought to the American Colonies from England in the 17th century, and since has escaped and reproduced on its own in various areas. The primary use of the tree is as a shade tree. Best suited for parks and larger areas. Leaves are 3-5 inches with 3-7 pairs of rounded lobes and extremely short petioles. The acorns long and skinny.

The patriarch of the red oak group. Grows both in shade and full sun.. Bark is smooth in youth but becomes fissured with shiny stripes down the center. Leaves
are alternate, seven to nine lobes, 7 to 10 inches long and paper thin, not glossy. The wood is prized for it's timber value. The acorn cup is flat, like a saucer, and encloses only the lower one quarter of the nut. The tree has good symmetry and beautiful red fall color.
